What is a u3a and What Happens at Washington u3a?
In simple terms, a u3a is an organisation for people who are no longer in full time employment. There is no minimum age. From the start of the movement in the UK in 1981, the guiding principles were to promote lifelong learning through self-help interest groups covering a wide range of topics and activities as chosen by members. Learning is viewed in the broadest sense of the word, just as an example, it could be looking into the history of an area or in contrast learning to play various sports. The social aspect of being a member is equally important; meeting people, making new friends and sharing experiences. Washington u3a was set up in January 2000. A lot has happened since then. The range of groups changes with the differing interests of our members and new groups are encouraged. (Current groups can be viewed under the heading of “Groups”). We have a monthly meeting, usually with an invited speaker, but sometimes presented by our own members. (A list of speakers can be found under Events). Visits and lunches are arranged throughout the year.
To keep everything running smoothly, we have a committee who work very hard to promote interesting activities and events so that our members are able to LEARN LAUGH and LIVE.
